The brief was to provide a landscape that complemented the contemporary renovation of a Victorian residence. It included creating a seamless transition from inside to out, with a swimming pool as a prominent feature that didn’t completely overtake the rear garden, room to entertain and an informal leafy garden with a resort feel.

The layout of the pool was crucial in this design. By aligning to the side boundary, the pool became a strong part of the overall landscape, without being too dominant. The difference in level of the rear garden was achieved by adding other elements such as the pool and deck. The raised level of the pool reinforces the site’s relationship with the house. The blurring of boundaries with lush planting and the use of ‘borrowed landscapes’ i.e. neighbouring trees, gives this landscape a sense of grandeur.
